Ambarsariya - Sona Mahapatra

It has been a Punjabi tradition to give a feeling of  'apnaa pan' (homeliness) to all their names. Following this tradition, America became 'Amreeka', Canada became 'Kanneda' and Amritsar has always been known as Ambersar. Amritsar is a well know town in Punjab, India known for The Golden Temple (harmandir sahib), Jallianwala Bagh and awesome - awesome food. Ambarsariya is a person who lives in (or is a native from) Amritsar.

Though this is a bollywood song from the movie 'Fukrey', it has a genuine traditional touch to it. Not just the lyrics but also the music. It beautifully captures the state of mind of a traditional punjabi mutiyar (young female). Not to mention that the lyrics are lovely and the music - mesmerizing.

Gali mein maare phere,
Paas aane ko mere (x2)
Kabhie parakhtaa nain merey tu,
Kabhie parakhtaa tore (x2)
He roams around in my street
to come near me
sometimes he checks out my eyes,
sometimes he checks out my walk!

Ambarsariya, mundyave kachiyan kaliyan na tod (x2)
Teri maa ne boley hain mujhe teekhe se bol.
Ambarsariya ...
Ambarsariya, don't pluck immature buds o boy.
Your mother has said me stinging words.

Gori - gori meri kalai ...
Gori - gori meri kalai
Chudiyan kali - kali
Main sharmaati roz lagati
Kajal surmaa laali.
My wrists are very fair,
bangles are deep black.
I blush and put on
Kohl and lipstick everyday.

Nahin main surma paana
Roop na main chamkaana
Nain nasheeley ho agar to
Surmey di ki lod
I don't want to use kohl (lampblack)
I don't want to further refine my beauty
If the eyes are intoxicating,
What's the need of kohl!

Ambarsariya, mundyave kachiyan kaliyan na tod (x2)
Teri maa ne boley hain mujhe teekhe se bol.
Ambarsariya ...
